1898-1936. Spanish poet and playwright, born
in Granada. Romancero gitano/Gipsy
Ballad-book 1928 shows the influence of the
Andalusian songs of the area. In 1929-30
Lorca visited New York, and his experiences
are reflected in Poeta en Nuevo York 1940. He
returned to Spain, founded a touring
theatrical company, and wrote plays such as
Bodas de sangre/Blood Wedding 1933 and La
casa de Bernarda Alba/The House of Bernarda
Alba 1936. His poems include Lament, written
for the bullfighter Mejias. He was shot by
the Falangists during the Spanish Civil War.
